Naba Chhandam

PRESS NOTE

Kolkata, [1st August 2025] – Naba Chhandam is proud to present “Ghazal Safarnama” (Journey of Ghazal Through Ages), a unique musical event that will take you on a journey through the remarkable development of Ghazal, from its inception to its contemporary forms. Ghazal is more than just a musical style; it is an art form that combines Urdu poetry and music, allowing each artist the freedom to express sur (melody) and kavya (poetry) in their own distinctive way.

Ghazal’s Timeless Appeal

The enduring beauty of Ghazal lies in the depth of the Urdu language, which eloquently expresses a wide range of human sentiments and emotions. Though its origins are Persian, this musical style has been cherished and nurtured in India for centuries. Over time, countless renowned artists—including Begum Akhtar, Farida Khanum, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Pankaj Udhas, Jagjit Singh, Chandan Dass, Anup Jalota, Talat Aziz, and Hariharan—have enriched this art form beyond national borders. The timeless appeal of Ghazals across generations ensures that its legacy continues to thrive.

“Radiogram to Instagram”: The Evolution of Ghazal

Based on the theory of “demand and supply,” we have created a program that illustrates the decade-spanning journey of Ghazals in India. At this event, various artists will perform Ghazals chronologically, treating the audience to a musical journey that ranges from classic to contemporary Ghazals. This journey, which bridges the classic and modern forms of Ghazal, can truly be called a transition from “Radiogram to Instagram.”

Artist Lineup

The event will feature performances by several esteemed artists:

  • Padmasri Anup Jalota: An Indian singer, musician, and actor, best known for his contributions to the bhajan and ghazal genres. He is popularly known as the “Bhajan Samrat” and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2012. He will commemorate the works of Pankaj Udhas, Mohammed Rafi, and Bhupinder Singh, in addition to performing many of his own Ghazals.
  • Vidushi Prabhati Mukherjee: An eminent vocalist and top-grade Hindustani Music performer. She is a disciple of the maestros Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Begum Akhtar, the “Queen of Ghazal.” The unique blend of both gurus is reflected in her voice. She will perform retro ghazals, transporting the audience back to the nostalgic black and white era.
  • Sri Chandan Dass: A highly respected and acclaimed ghazal singer in India, known for his sweet voice and captivating performances. His popularity has solidified his position as a prominent figure among contemporary ghazal singers. He will be presenting his own Ghazals to mesmerize the audience.

The event will be held at Mahajati Sadan on 6th of September 2025 at 5P.M. onwards. We warmly invite everyone to join us for this unforgettable evening of music.
